Robert Pikes Personal letter to Judge Corwin-
in the letter, Pike argues that ghost like evidence is unreliable because these alleged visions and apparitions are “more commonly false and delusive than real, and cannot be known when they are real and when feigned.” Pike goes on to argue that ghost like evidence is considered unreliable evidence for three specific reasons: 1. Apparitions and visions are sometimes caused by delusion. 2. The devil himself can appear in the shape of a person without their knowledge. 3. Even if an apparition was real, it is impossible to know whether it is real or a delusion. |
Federal Dangerous Aliens Immigration Bill-
The Federal Dangerous Aliens Immigration Bill talks about how people should not be excluded because of their beliefs. This document addresses a letter in which an attorney general is allowed to deny admission to aliens who he thinks could endanger the public's safety. |
Robert Pikes personal letter to judge Corwin is similar to the Federal dangerous Aliens immigration bill. Witchcraft was a threat in Salem, and people who were practicing witchcraft were executed. Those who did not admit to practicing witchcraft were then taken to trail and then sentenced to death later. These trials were very unfair though, explained in Pikes letter he talks about why would people being accused of witchcraft use magic in a courtroom trying to prove their innocents? It doesn't make sense but nobody took this to consideration, and the trials were very unfair and everyone was sentenced to jail or death. Witches were accused of "bad behavior" and ruining things around towns. The church did not want anything out of line and would just get rid of any thing or anyone that did not fall line. This reminds me of trials held for illegal immigrants. In most cases trials held for illegal immigrants lead to deportation. Like the trials in Salem trials held today for immigration are also unfair. Illegal immigrants are considered threats like the witches in Salem and are also accused first for terroristic like activity( Bad Behavior) . It can take years and years to become an American Citizen, so many people come over to have better opportunities for jobs and improve their lives illegally. Like the church/ government in Salem, America is quick to get rid of anything out of place and not give second chances, or give anyone a chance to explain themselves. Both situation were quick to execute the threat weather it was death or deportation.
Section 5 of Salem Witchcraft; with an account of Salem village, and a history of opinions on witchcraft and kindred subjects, volume 1 and 2-
This article talks about how children were not only permitted, but induced, to become witnesses against their parents, and parents against their children. Husbands and wives were made to criminate each other as witnesses in court. Quote- “How did you know it was your mother? — The cat told me so, that she was my mother. She said she afflicted Phelps's child last Saturday, and Elizabeth Johnson joined with her to do it. She had a wooden spear, about as long as her finger, of Elizabeth Johnson; and she had it of the Devil. She would not own that she had ever been at the witch-meeting at the village. This is the substance. |
"adopt immediately a zero-tolerance policy"
In April, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered prosecutors along the border to "adopt immediately a zero-tolerance policy" for illegal border crossings. That included prosecuting parents traveling with their children as well as people who subsequently attempted to request asylum.

During the Salem Witch trials children accusing their parents of witchcraft and vise versa, family's would get separated. Children traveling with their parents are likely to be separated from their parents like the family's in the Salem witch trials. This leaves kids alone and have no one to take care of them. In both situations the kids probably have more responsibilities than kids today in America. Which leads to my next point of kids are more privileged than adults. Kids are more likely to get second chances, the kids in Salem were trusted more than the adults. Kids these days could commit crime as a child but get out of jail at 18 and still have a chance at life. Some differences though would be yes kids are given second chances but kids are not as trusted today as they were during Salem. Kids in Salem were trusted more than the adults, children were pure. Today children are foolish and "don't know better." I find this interesting because overtime children are not as praised as they were back in Salem. this also shows the evolution of religion through time, and how peoples actions can disprove opinions.
English-For english I created a character map of three characters from the Crucible, Elizebeth proctor, John proctor and Abigail. The map shows colors, shape and arrangement of shapes and they represent the characters individually.
For Elizabeth Proctor I choose a small, dark green circle to represent her character in the Crucible. In the Crucible Elizabeth is overall a well rounded character, but still has a load of problems in the story, the reason why she is a circle is because of they way she deals with her problems. She doesn’t act out and and get overworked like some of the characters in the story. To deal with the affair between her husband and Abigail she fired Abigail, and is trying to rebuild her relationship with John. I can easily infer that she felt betrayed by her husband by scrutinizing her body language throughout the beginning of the play. She doesn’t make much eye contact with John and you can feel the tension between both characters greatly in the begging of the play. She would never betray John and tell the church that he had cheated on her, she even lies to the church when they ask her if he had the affair. The color green represents courage, which is one of the first words I would use to describe Elizabeth. At the end of the play Elizabeth let John go. He had to sacrifice his life in the name of truth. Despite everything she wanted him to do the right thing even if that meant dyeing and leaving behind his children. She is one of the strongest characters in the play and she had to let her husband go relying on religion and the fact that she and her kids would hopefully see John in heaven.
For John Proctor I thought a blue rectangle would be the most appropriate for his character in the crucible. He couldn’t be a circle because he has some rougher edges to his personality. He is stubborn and never shows much empathy in the play. I viewed John as angry most of the play. Most of the story he was continuously furious with the situation and how he was involved. Right at the end though John come to some kind of peace with himself when he stood up to the government and saved his name. This leads into why I choose blue, Johns emotions in the play remind of a storm. Blue can be universal when you look at it, you can have depressing or calming emotions depending on the shade. During a storm the sky becomes are dark blue grey and gloomy, but after the clouds clear away the sky is still blue, but a happier blue. That feeling when the rain finally clears, is what I think John felt at the end of the play.
For Abigail Williams I chose an upside down red triangle to represent her personality through out the crucible. Some people believe that a right side up triangle is pointing towards god and Christians view this as a symbol of Trinity. The triangle that points downward is one of the oldest symbols of the divine power of the female. Abigail obviously has a lot of power in the play. Abigail has power over the other young girls in the story and the people of the church. When Abigail would be “getting sick” the others girls would follow, this also applied when Abigail would see the devil etc. I picked the color red because it represents danger and power. Abigail not only got between John and Elizabeth’s marriage but she also was one of the main reasons people died during the Salem witch trials. Instead of her being punished for practicing voodoo and dancing naked in the woods, she placed the blame on others which then lead to much worse.

Art-
For my art portion I created a relic piece. Instead of the relic holding an important item, I chose to fill the inside of the relic with old documents from the actual Salem Witch Trails. The relic is symbolically holding the meaning behind my project without actually telling the story. Each side represents one of the three characters from my character map from English. Side one is Abigail, flowers represent love and in the play Abigail thought she was in love with john, but in the end her love for john dies. The back side is john because his character in the Crucible reminded me of a storm. Blue is a very universal color because when you look at it depending on the shade, the color can be happy or sad. The painting shows the transformation between having anger to becoming peaceful throughout the play. Side three is Elizebeth Proctor. Butterfly's are known to represent courage. Elizabeth showed a lot of courage when she had to face her husbands affair, and then john died after being accused of being a witch.
